New unit started in UK - inspired by SoundSport
It is with great pleasure that we can announce that, under the banner of the Southern Knights Performing Arts organisation, a new musical ensemble has been setup in Brighton & Hove, United Kingdom. Under the direction of Paul Townsend, this group will comprise of G brass instruments plus a small percussion section.
The repertoire will include fun and funky music that is instantly recognisable, and the sole aim is to entertain.
WHAT WE ARE NOT - a drum corps, or traditional marching band - we don't take ourselves too seriously, and we won't be wearing uniforms or marching a show or travelling to the USA to compete on a football field at DCI or DCA but we have been inspired by the introduction of SoundSport into the UK by Drum Corps United Kingdom.
WHAT WE ARE - fun loving, entertaining, not afraid to try new things - a cross between Bridgemen - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2WCA6oV9AAc, Mnozil Brass - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nGwSmowLGTI and Meute - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s2DQK1kcYrU.
We are looking for horn players, a few percussionists (can be kit or marching snare/base drum/quads) and potentially a marimba/xylophone as well (especially if you have your own instrument).
We practice once a week, for 2 hours on a Wednesday night in Brighton.
We are planning on performing in a few SoundSport shows but our aim is to entertain (not win) in addition we will be busking and performing at paid events throughout the country.
Alan Thompson, Chairman of Southern Knights added "Knowing Pauls commitment and drive, from when he was heavily involved back 20+ years ago with Southern Knights when we had a very active Drum Corps, so to be able to support him in the new venture was an easy decision and I wish them all the best of luck."
If you would like to know more please message Paul directly on Facebook at @paultownsend or via email at orders@beaujangles.com

15 minutes with the Judging Co-ordinator, Mark Bassett
What are the responsibilities of the Judging Co-ordinator?
I am responsible for providing a team of certified judges for Drum Corps Europe, and for managing the Judging Team. I ensure that the Code of Conduct rules are enforced, and also act as the first point of contact for any queries that are raised during the season – I also provide a response when any investigation has concluded. I am responsible for the recruitment of new judges and the start of their training, and (along with the Judges’ Administrator, Ann) for the arrangement and logistics of the Judges’ College, which is held in May each year. I also oversee the judging allocation/assignment process.
This sounds like a lot of work! Why did you take up the role?
It is a busy role, but one that I enjoy. There is always something to work on from January through to December – it’s not just a job for the summer months! After my passion for Drum Corps began back in 1990, it feels good to be giving something back to a hobby that I have got so much from.
For my ‘day job’ I work as a Project Manager for the UK government. I was put forward for Judging Co-Ordinator, as I have transferrable skills to undertake the requirements of the role. I have been in this post since the start of the 2014 season.
What are your aims for the Judging Team during the 2017 season?
Firstly – we need to recruit more judges! If you are interested in starting your training this year, even if you are still marching/teaching, please get in contact! We all always looking for new judges across all captions, but at the moment especially for Ensemble Music and Music Effect.
The Judging Team contains a group of people that are skilled and experienced in the area(s) they adjudicate, and are very passionate about the activity. I hope that the team remains strong, friendly and willing to learn and better themselves, and that they continue to provide educational and constructive commentary/feedback to corps at all levels of ability.
I am very grateful to each member of the team for volunteering their time to provide this integral part of our activity.
Alongside your Judges' Co-ordinator role, you also judge Field Percussion. Describe your judging experience to-date in three words!
Challenging. Rewarding. Fun.
You are taking a step back from judging in 2017 - what are your plans for the season?
I have lived with Kidney Failure for most of my adult life, and my kidneys failed completely in late 2009. This resulted in me having to undergo dialysis treatment multiple times per week, and therefore no longer able to be involved in teaching a drum corps.
I started training to be a DCE Judge in 2010, which allowed me the opportunity to stay involved in the activity, but without the weekly commitment level expected from teaching a corps.
In April 2016 I had a Kidney Transplant, which has afforded me a new lease of life. This includes being away from home for longer periods of time due to not having to dialyse, and having increased energy levels to allow me to do more of what makes me happy.
Music; specifically drum corps, has played a big part of my life, and is something that I really missed during my prolonged period of illness. I have decided to take a step back from judging this season, and instead have taken the opportunity to be involved with The Company Performance Ensemble. I am a member of the percussion staff, as well as assisting with logistics management of the corps.
I hope that this sabbatical from the field will allow me to refresh/improve my percussion knowledge, and enable me to bring a renewed understanding from a corps perspective back to the judging team.
Best wishes and good luck to each corps that are competing in the 2017 edition of the European Music Games.
From middle C's to the Middle East - For the love of Drum Corps
If I also tell you we couldn't (and still can't) comfortably read music, well nothing more than simple whole, half or quarter notes, you'll know how important it is to spend quality time with someone, who compared to the rest of us, is right up their with Mozart. That's where our old brass instructor and lead soprano comes in.
Now like most corps in the 80's learning music meant spending the off season in a local school room painfully going through the score bar by bar and if your 12/13 year old self could keep concentration for long enough, you would manage to put a few bars of music together by the end of the night, it was like that in the Barons anyway! Now It's important at this stage to mention 80's technology or the lack of it, (It's important later on) Let's just say it wasn't exactly cutting edge!
So you can imagine all these years later when a group of old friends got together again and thought about picking up some instruments, learning music was never going to be our strong point. Although lucky for us our old brass instructor was one of those old friends. We had one minor issue to overcome however, he now lives in Bahrain, not exactly within easy commuting distance of the South side of Glasgow!
Now times change and technology has improved so much. Smart phones? Super fast broadband? We rely on it every day and for us it makes a real difference. It makes performing together again today a reality. So no more face to face classroom tuition, we Skype call our favourite brass instructor every Tuesday in the Middle East. We learn the music (still bar by bar!), we manage to put a few bars together at the end of the night and we once again get to enjoy the activity that gave us so much in our teens. We get to see our brass instructor in person every time we perform, he makes the trip from Bahrain to wherever we have a competition, no Skype required, just like the 80's all over again!
The Baron
Cory will perform at the IMG SoundSport Forest of Dean Show
Cory from the Rhondda Valley in South Wales, who are officially the best Brass Band in the World, will be making the short journey to the Forest of Dean for what promises to be a day of superb musical entertainment.
The event will commence with a traditional Brass Band contest, aimed at Youth, Training and Unregistered Bands performing a 20 minute concert program. This is followed by the IMG SoundSport show where bands from a wide variety of backgrounds including Mini Corps, Wind Bands and Brass Bands compete head to head in a 7 minute performance, with entertainment and visual effect counting towards the score as well as the music.
At the end of competition Cory will give a special exhibition performance before joining all the bands for a Massed Band, giving the performers the chance to play alongside the reigning British and European Champions.Cinderford Academy conductor Clive Lewis said “We are over the moon that Cory have agreed to attend our IMG SoundSport show. They are the undisputed number one band in the World and have been so for the last ten years! Last year’s contest was a great start but this year’s should be absolutely tremendous.”
Cory Conductor Philip Harper said “We're pleased to be able to support this unique initiative from the Cinderford Band and we are looking forward to entertaining gathered band fans from across the different worlds of banding!”
Participation in the show is open until March 3rd and further information is available from contest secretary Sharon Thomas.
