Jubal sets sights on 2018 U.S. tour
The trip will mark the Dutch corps' fifth trip to the United States, after last participating in DCI Tour events during the summer of 2015.
One of Europe's most well traveled and successful marching music ensembles, Jubal makes trips nearly every summer, having spent time in Italy in 2016 and France in 2017 since its last journey to America.
“Our U.S. trip will be a little shorter in 2018 than in 2015,” Jubal director Hans Kloppert said. “Plans for our tour will take us to — among other locations — the states of Illinois, Wisconsin, Ohio, Michigan and Pennsylvania."
The corps will wrap up its two-and-a-half-week tour performing at the 2018 DCI Open Class World Championship Prelims and Finals in Michigan City, Indiana, before heading to Indianapolis for DCI World Championship events at Lucas Oil Stadium in August. A multi-time Drum Corps Netherlands and Drum Corps Europe champion, Jubal will once again set its sights on DCI's International Class title, which it previously took home in 2015.
“It is exciting news that Jubal will be returning to compete in Drum Corps International events,” DCI Open Class coordinator David Eddleman said. “Their creative programming, along with the international flair that their presence adds to events, makes Jubal a crowd favorite.”
Outside of the competitive performances, Jubal's tour will also give its corps members the opportunity for sightseeing and for cultural exchanges with their American corps member counterparts.
The corps' complete tour itinerary will be announced with the anticipated release of the 2018 DCI Tour schedule in November. Follow Jubal via Facebook for the latest updates on the corps' 2018 U.S. tour.

The Blue Devils victory came in front of a record crowd of 23,342 Saturday night at Lucas Oil Stadium, marking the seventh straight season the Finals have drawn record attendance in Indy.
“Being a world champion is such an indescribable feeling,” said Blue Devils mellophone player Trevor Stojanovich. “Knowing that this is our 18th championship, and being able to represent all the Blue Devils from the past 60 years, is something I never thought I would do. Drum Corps United Kingdom launch Hall Of Fame
DCUK was formed in 1980 and the original vehicle for recognising the great work of individuals and their contributions to the UK activity was the DCUK Fellowship, which began in 1985, and 18 people were inducted. These eighteen people will be automatically inducted into the DCUK Hall of Fame this year.
The first entrants to the new Hall of Fame will be inducted at the British Drum Corps Championships on Saturday 23rd September. Nominations are now being invited and full details of how to nominate and the criteria required is available at the Hall Of Fame webpage. These awards are for recognition for the overall activity and not for recognition for work with individual Corps and the nomination must reflect this.
Fully completed nominations must be received by 11pm on Sunday 20th August 2017 – any received after that date or any received not fully completed will not be considered. This is an exciting new development for DCUK and a way of saying “thank you” to those past and present that have shaped and/or still are shaping our activity.
The Company lead rankings after win at Leicester
The first part of the European Music Games came to a close on Sunday July 16th as the DCUK show in Leicester saw performance levels continuing to grow and ranking changes taking place.
The Company took their first Premier Class win in DCUK this year with their 2017 production "Tomorrow". They increased their points by 3.95 from their last outing in Woking on July 2nd. As a result, The Company sit on the top of the European rankings going in to the summer break.
Kidsgrove Scouts also improved points-wise on the last contest and scored 76.90 with their performance of "Montages and Capulets".
Visiting corps Starriders from Germany finished in third place with 67.90, which leaves them 4th in the overall rankings before the German Open on September 2nd.
Scoring remained close in the middle of the group, with just 0.15 seperating Beeches and Cadence.

Celtic Crusaders win close contest in Arklow
The Irish season got underway on Saturday July 15th in Arklow Celtic Football Club. The conditions were somewhat difficult for groups, as high temperatures and high gusts took to the field with them.
Celtic Crusaders, from Mullingar had started their season at Rasteder Musiktage two weeks ago, and it proved beneficial as they increased their score by 2.70 points. Their show "Pulse" also picked up caption awards in High Effect, High Field Music and a tie with Clondalkin Youth Band in High Visual.
The scores in the top three were extremely close. Visiting corps from Northampton in England were just 0.10 behind Celtic Crusaders with their production "The Bench". The music programme included Coldplays "Fix You" and "Morning" from Peer Gynt by Edvard Greig. The show centred around a bench and more particularly a bench which a homeless man used as his home. The theme was well portrayed by the use of props and guard.
The close scoring continued as Clondalkin Youth Band were placed third with the seperation of only 0.05 behind Liberty Drum Corps. Their show was called "The Book" and told the story of The Book of Kells, a book of great historical importance in Ireland.
The tight scoring didn't finish there, as Inbhear Mor Performance Ensemble and Vikings Drum Corps were seperated by just 0.15, which leaves the rest of the season very unpredictable in Ireland.
The contest in Arklow was hosted by Inbhear Mor Performance Ensemble, who celebrated 25 years in existence. Director Mary Kirwan spoke to the large audience and thanked the local and banding community for their continued support. She also presented their longest serving member, Oisin Molloy with a momento of his hard work and dedication.
The Irish Championships take place in Mullingar on Saturday September 2nd. More information on their facebook page here.
Results:
5th Vikings Drum Corps (41.45)
4th Inbhear Mor Performance Ensemble (41.60)
3rd Clondalkin Youth Band (50.55)
2nd Liberty Drum Corps (50.60)
1st Mullingar Town Band - Celtic Crusaders (50.70)

First judged experience for Showband Axel in Middelburg
Last Saturday in Middelburg I had the chance to be present to the first judged performance of the Showband Axel (Axel, The Netherlands) inside the SoundSport/IMG circuit. After some years of inactivity, in 2014 a group of music fans have decided to refound the band, following the simple rule to have fun with quality. In a year a complete group was field for the parade's activity, and two years later they decided to take part in this adventure. For this reason we've decided to interview Marco van Ham, brass & show instructor of Showband Axel, in order to know better this new Dutch ensemble.
Hi Marco: congratulations for the impressive performance you've field on SoundSport Middelburg.
Thank you Nicola for the opportunity that Soundsport gave us to compete in this competition.
Marco, would you like to tell us the circumstances that moved a group of passionate musicians to refound the Showband Axel?
In September 2013, we’ve organized a reunion in Axel because the city existed 800 years. We’ve thought that we could bring on 40 old members to perform once more….but we had that number after 1 ! week. We’ve ended with almost 80 members (from all over the country and Belgium) and it was one big party from the beginning till the night we’ve performed. After that we’ve talked with a few people why not try to restart Showband Axel. So we did…with some of my contacts in the DCE field we bought instruments from bands who stopped or bands that bought new instruments and we arranged some instructors and started practising on the property of the soccer club of Axel which allowed us to use their buildings and fields.
What kind of performance activity did you choose to follow after the refoundation? And what kind of philosophy is driving the group?
First of all we didn’t start as a group with a show.. we want to do some street performances. We practised once per two weeks but after a few month we were grown to 30 members which was amazing considering all the groups who stopped in this activity. After 1 year we had 40 ! Members. After that first year we evaluated with the group what to do to ensure the future. We decided to change the overall instructor and made the decision to make a show. With new music of a higher level and start training every week.
How and why did you choose to participate into the SoundSport / IMG circuit?
This Soundsport-event was close to Axel and is a low level activity to start with clear reports to improve the whole organisation of the Showband.
How was this experience for the members?
They were excited! It was so much better than expected to present our show for the first time. We just finished our show 2 weeks earlier and it was our third full run. And it was our first performance in front of a stand with spectators who know what it takes to bring a good show.
And for the staff?
I think the staff was more nervous than the members..not about the contest..but for the members. But we were so proud of the members and how they performed.
Do you think that the SoundSport experience has been an enrichment for the Showband Axel? If yes, how? And could it be possible to repeat it in future?
Definitely! If you start in this activity and don’t have much experience you definitely want to start in Soundsport. The feedback we’ve got was amazing and constructive to build a secure future for our organisation. Next step is to take this show outside on a field. But we definitely will return to Soundsport.
Last thing: if I was a musician (or want to become one) based around Axel's area, and I wanted to march with you or just to have more information about Showband Axel, who do I have to contact?
Please contact Machteld Heerspink: Machteld@showbandaxel.org
Where on internet can I find info, news, photos and videos about you?
We have an internet site: www.showbandaxel.org and on facebook: showbandaxel
Thank you so much Marco and best wishes for a brilliant future.
